Not good
I bought 4 brands of agar from Amazon and compared them side-by-side. To 1 cup of 50% apple juice (1/2 cup of juice + ½ cup of water) I added 1 teaspoon of agar. Then I heated it almost to boiling, stirred and let cool down to room temperature. “Hardness” is how hard the product is. The harder the better, meaning you have to use less amount of agar to achieve same results. “Taste” means taste. Ideally agar should have no taste at all, so it won’t change the flavor of your dish. Hardness and taste are rated on scale from 1 to 5, with 1 is the worst and 5 is the best. Toxic??
This powder had a slight chemical smell when I first opened it, which is something I've heard of before with cheap agar-agar powders. I figured it might be alright once I made something with it but this was not the case. It made my water mochi taste like liquid sharpie. Trying to retun now. :(

Good quality
Used this to make jelly fruit cakes and it works beautifully. It sets as it supposed to in timely manner at room temperature. I use about 1 tsp per each of liquid. To cut down sugar intake, I use monkfruit sweetener. It's like eating dessert with no guilt. Love it!

Firm and good vegan jello
Second time we buy. We use this to make vegan jello (gelatin). This brand is the one we like, comes out firm and good. We tried other brands and do not texturize (firm). This brand is so good that I put jello on my lunchbox in the morning and it is still nice and firm at lunch time!I have made several flavors with this brand using red wine, fresh fruit.

Perfect for vegan pies
I purchased this product as an ingredient for vegan pies. My child has allergies to dairy/egg, & my brother is vegan...so I do a lot of vegan baking. Pies were a challenge without using starch all of the time. I bought Isa Chandowitz's pie cookbook & Agar-Agar powder was a thickener in a lot of her pies. I tried the flakes (which I had), but it didn't produce the results that you would expect in a pie. The powder was fast, easy to work with & produced a spectacular vegan grasshopper pie w/ chocolate cookie crust! I think it took about 10 days to get here, so it's something you have to plan ahead for, so I made sure to order 6 packs. Happy cooking!

It made vegan deviled eggs possible!
Wonderful stuff. We have egg allergies at our home. My son has been wanting to try his grandma's deviled eggs for year. I saw recipe on website and wanted to try it. I have used agar flakes in past and wasn't thrilled with it for fruit gelatin dessert, but am excited to try other recipes based upon my results with this product.
