Highly recommended - labour survival tool
I was induced with a hormone pessary as my waters had broken with no contractions. I honestly would not have survived the contractions and pain without this machine. I had taken paracetamol an hour after induction and wasn't able to have any stronger pain relief as there were no available beds on labour ward. As a result I had to manage the pain for 10 hours before a bed was available and I could get an epidural. For the 2 hours prior to getting an epidural I was given gas and air, but by this point I was so exhausted that I was unable to coordinate my breathing to gain any benefit from it. The Tens got me through every contraction alongside counterpressure applied by my husband. It is without doubt one of the best purchases I made throughout my pregnancy and I would recommend this to anyone who is planning on having a vaginal delivery (even if you want a water birth, as it is difficult to predict whether this will truly be possible). I have also continued to use this for lower back pain following the delivery which has been really helpful to aiding my recovery. In summary my advice is that this is worth every penny and if you are not keen on purchasing it, you can hire it on the babycare website.

Amazing bit of kit!
Excellent machinesHired one for first baby 3 years ago.Purchase this one for second child who arrived two days ago.My wife raves about the TENS and said she would have been in trouble during labour if she didn’t have it.It proved excellent pain relief when required.I now look forward to using it for some reoccurring shoulder pain.

Pain relief like no other!
So I didn’t get to use this product in Labour (long story involving a c-section!) however! I have a bad neck and this has been an absolute god send. It is easy to set up and use and honestly, feels just like the one my physio uses! When I use it it is comfortable and with use over time it has given me pain relief, something normally I need physio for! I have saved money by using this instead of going to physio quite so often, so I would say it’s excellent value for money. I am sure it would have been great in Labour - my little boy just didn’t want me to try it out clearly. I would highly recommend to any mothers to be and anyone with a bad neck! Five stars from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Used for third baby
I bought this because I was having a lot of anxiety about giving birth to my third baby. For babies one and two I used gas and air. Contractions are intense and can take over your body at times so I wanted something more to help me cope during the early stages of labour. I had convinced myself I would be asking for an epidural this time (as I had built up so much anxiety for the months before birth). I put the tens machine on about half an hour into contractions and immediately felt relief for every contraction using the boost button. I didn’t have that same fear of waiting for the next contraction as I found them more manageable. When I got to the hospital I was 5cm dilated and still found the contractions manageable using boost. I then had gas and air together with the tens machine and breathed through the rest of my contractions until I was ready to push. I didn’t find it beneficial for pushing stage! Not sure if this was because baby was big and back to back or because pushing is a different kind of pain/experience.It was attached to my back for about 5 hours total and never moved and batteries didn’t run out.One of my best purchases!

Wouldn't have been without it!
A definite must have purchase for anyone about to have a baby. I was able to get to 3 cm dilated without any pain relief but once at the hospital was grateful to be able to put this on and still wander around whilst the next few hours dragged.Downsides:1. The sticky pads are not brilliant if you need them quite low and want to keep oscillating positions, they do get crumpled up and start to come away from the skin, meaning that they are not as effective. I found that if I had been sitting or lying down I had to keep re-applying pressure to them when I had contractions but was standing up otherwise I couldn't feel them. This was really only a problem on my lower back ones not the higher ones.2. One of the pads/leads did stop working, fortunately I had read this may happen and so had purchased spares which I had taken and I have never been so grateful for them. Would definitely advise getting extra pads and connections.3. The pulse setting I found to be rather uncomfortable and actually intensified my contractions and hurt my skin even on a fairly low setting in the early stages but found a low setting useful as the labour progressed.Upside:1. Did distract from the early contractions and help with the muscle tightening2. Battery life was epic, I was in labour 18 hours and used the tens machine for over 11 hours of it and didn't have to replace the batteries or have any problem with them even though the machine was on constantly3. Very portable, had a clip I could fasten to my gown so that I could walk around easily and make it to the toilet, etc4. Easy to use and later in labour good as the leads were long enough for my husband to have 'control' of the pulse function. As I got tired he took over and was able to press it when he knew I was having a contraction, which helped him feel involved and gave him something to do (is a lot of waiting around for the bloke)Although quite expensive, it was £40 to hire one so was very glad I had purchased my own for the extra and could pack it in to my hospital bag well in advance knowing I was all sorted. Simple to use and effective particularly in early labour.

Can recommend.
I haven't had the chance to use it during an actual labor, but the test run went great. It feels very powerful to me.

Babycare TENS are manufactures of the highest quality TENS machines. We are known for our ergonomic designs and customer focused functionality. Babycare TENS provides unrivalled customer care. All Babycare TENS machines are compliant with strict European medical device regulations.
Customer feedback has shown that a Babycare TENS Machine is most effective during the first stage of labour, and helps the mother to remain in control, stay alert, and considerably reduce drug intake. Most importantly, there are no known side effects for you or your baby.
Babycare TENS is the nations favourite maternity TENS machine company. Why not try it out for yourself! The Elle TENS is so easy to use. All the settings are pre-set so there is no fuss in setting up. The Elle TENS uses the latest Opti-Max technology.
What is Optimax? An extra pulse of pain combatting power, often used in the final stages of labour - when you most need it. Optimax is a feature of both the Elle TENS and Elle TENS+ What is TENS?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a method of pain relief that has been used successfully worldwide for many years by pregnant women and professional midwives to treat labour pain naturally. TENS promotes the release of endorphins (the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals) while also creating a barrier in the brain to block the pain signals.
How does a Babycare TENS machine work?
At the onset of labour, simply apply the four pads to your back as shown in the accompanying instructions and switch the Babycare TENS machine on. Increase the intensity to a comfortable level so that you can feel a pleasant pulsing sensation. When experiencing a contraction, press the booster button for the extra surge of power needed to combat the pain. When the contraction ends, press the booster button again - it is that simple!
The Elle TENS allows you to be mobile, lucid, and remain in control of your own pain relief. When used from the first signs of labour pain, it helps you stay at home longer, as well as being suitable for use in the hospitals. You can use it even with a water birth, but not in the water itself. It is recommended to use the Elle TENS right from the start of your labour to build up your endorphin level. As a midwife will usually ask you to enter the water when you are 4-5cm dilated, TENS is an ideal pain-relief solution up until this point. The Elle TENS can be used in conjunction with other pain relief too, just ask your midwife.
The Elle TENS can also be used post labour for general pain relief, such as back or period pain. Replacement electrodes are available (B000A1QKGW) from .
The Elle TENS is supplied as a complete kit with full instructions including electrode placement guide, and a pack of four 40x100mm pads, leads, batteries, pouch ad neck cord. The Elle TENS (unit only) includes a two-year guarantee. Should you have any questions or require more advice on the use of Elle TENS please contact Babycare TENS.
Babycare TENS recommend mums-to-be test the machine before the due date (after 37 weeks of pregnancy) to ensure you understand how the Elle TENS works and feels and also to make sure everything is working as it should be. Please refer to the “Quick Reference Guide” which can be found in the instruction. If you have any questions or concerns, call Babycare TENS on 0333 121 9737.
PLEASE NOTE: Additional and replacement Electrodes for the Elle TENS machine can be purchased from ; the product code is B000A1QKGW.One pack of four pads are supplied with this Elle TENS machine.
