A trip down memory lane
I loved the film serial and I regret that no longer do theatres nor even production companies make this fine film noir genre which was used during the Depression to keep folks coming back to the theatres to watch the real films. To get the small fry to come to theatres they used to have cartoons before the opening credits. Haven't been in a civilian theatre since 1961 and on Fort Knox in 1971 I saw my last film- Sabata- in any theatre. I prefer to collect and own films.

"Spaceship to the Unknown"
The original 1936 "Flash Gordon" serial (Video title: "Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers") is my favorite of the three Flash Gordon serials (and my all-time favorite serial). I've loved it for a long time and rate it 5/5. A condensed 67 minute feature film version of the serial called "Flash Gordon" was released by Universal Pictures in 1936 and re-released by Filmcraft in 1949 under the new title "Rocket Ship". "Rocket Ship" was sold to television in the 1950s and can be seen here on Amazon. The other version "Spaceship to the Unknown" is a condensed 98 minute version of the serial specially prepared for television in 1966. The print is in fine condition. Now, considering "Rocket Ship" is compact in length, it is more comprehensible and makes a more lively and entertaining film which I rate 4/5. Both of these edited versions are worth watching to compare what was left in and what was cut out. But, for me, nothing beats watching the 13 chapter serial in one sitting.

Old is new again.
I remember going to the theater as a child and watching this serial . It was so exciting then. It brings back many fond memories. And now my wife at times will let her students watch this video and they are absolutely infatuated with this serial. In the afternoon when the parents come to pick up their children if an episode is still playing they beg their parents 'please lets stay till the episode is over' and sometimes even the parents are caught up in the movie. With today's modern methods of movie making maybe the movie makers could learn a lesson from this.

Not worth the time and effort.
The movie black and white print was well restored. This is a typical chapter serial that was OK in its day for a young person that only had a radio. A person has nothing to compare a movie with--everything is novel.I was disappointed because I did not hear the soundtrack that they used 60 years ago. Buster Crabbe was OK because I like the way he bouches around and talk. Emperor Ming in his garb was a sight to behold.

Who will save Flash now?
I love Flash Gordon, and this is his best serial. Unfortunately, this is a poor transfer. It flickers, its dark, the sound isn't that sharp. I really want to point you at a better transfer, as this serial deserves so much more than my paltry 3 stars, but I don't own one. As this is, this is mostly for those willing to look past the transfer to the landmark serial that is contained on these disks; more a curiosity or of academic interest than sheer entertainment.
