Good storyteller. Bad relationship. Little Traumatic.
I've read Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNight before. I liked that and heard good things about this book so I thought I'd give it a try.I was somewhat prepared to deal with some of the issues I had with this book because I heard others talk about it, but I pushed through those to try to give it a real chance. In the end, these were my takeaways:PROS-JM is a great storyteller. Even when I was deeply uncomfortable with a part of the story, she writes in a way that is engaging and hard to get bored with.-Her characters have depth and seem somewhat realistic.-JM does a great job at crafting fast-paced, witty, interesting conversation (the quotes were cool).CONS-I was deeply uncomfy with how much time was spent emphasizing the age difference between J and A. It was super weird that, so early in the book, the relationship between J and A quickly goes from completely platonic and paternal to deeply sexual. I understand it's another time period and I can try to ignore that their age difference would be seen differently in the regency era, but J spends so much time vocalizing thoughts about how SUPER YOUNG A looks. It's also made very clear how child-like she thinks and acts. It feels like almost glorifying pedophilic ideas... J acknowledges how pursuing her sexually feels like a huge power difference, and then quickly is like "oh well". I get that this book was written over a decade ago, but the author seems aware the relationship dynamic is very problematic. So, I don't get why that aspect is highlighted so much...-Second, like a few others pointed out, it was weird that J was gone so long and then no one discussed what happened when he got back. Felt like a much needed opportunity for relationship development.-J was a bad husband often and I don't think he deserved A at all. As a character who is very young at the start and end of the book, I can understand why she couldn't see that. However, it was painful to watch. I felt like for J to have received that happy ending, there should have been WAY more relationship development and groveling. It was like J would be shitty to A, then A would forgive him as long as he was nice one time. I felt like she didn't value herself very highly and that made me sad - especially at the end... The characters seemed to have chemistry and a good time occassionally, but most of the relationship was filled with so much pain and trauma. I understand A Kingdom of Dreams had a similar thing going on, but this book took it way too far! To me, the love interest has to have some redeeming qualities. In this book, I felt like J wasn't all that interesting or remarkable aside from being described as hot!I should note that this book was partly unenjoyable to me because I related to A when I was a very young woman. From personal experience, I know that people like J (in the book) can change and become better. But, I don't think waiting around and hoping for people to do that is often worth the pain and stress in the long-term. I don't think that's a very romantic experience in the book or in real life... It was hard watching A have so much potential as a character and not really grow into that.

Got to love a wonderful historical romance. :)
Why oh why have I not read more historical romance novels. Being only my second HR Something Wonderful was just that, something wonderful. This story had me captivated right from the beginning. I quickly found myself submerged into the world of the characters and experiencing something different.I truly loved Jordan and Alexandra’s story. I guess you could say it was love at first sight for Alexandra. It may have been because she was naïve but I would like to believe it was because her heart was pure. Jordan was a bit jaded and cold hearted. His use for women was simple. It was solely for a physical need. He knew no other way.“I love life, even when bad things happen to me. I can't stop loving it. Every season of the year comes with a promise that something wonderful is going to happen to me someday.” ~ AlexandraAs these two worlds collide we watch Alexandra blossom and Jordan soften. As Alexandra struggles to fit into Jordan’s world and meet his demands Jordan begins to question all he has been taught in regards to feelings and emotions. Just when their lives become suitable tragedy strikes and Alexandra is left devastated and trying to cope.Time passes and things change...people change. But what becomes apparent to both Alexandra and Jordan is the beauty each of them gives to the other. But as Jordan is dealing with something unbeknownst to Alexandra, misunderstandings happen which leads to.....well you have to read the book to find out. :) But...Pain is shared and special moments are made. There is happiness and heartache. There is lust, desire and tenderness.I’ll be putting this on my bookshelf for now but I will certainly pull it out again and reread some of the chapters I loved the most. There was so many things I. The way the book is written your able to form these beautiful pictures in your head. Maybe it is where Jordan and Alexandra share a picnic or the place the go fishing and make love on the hill side, or when they go to a Ball. Or all the beautiful flowers. I also enjoyed all the side characters and what they added to the story. They brought humor and some cynicism which rounded things out."Now that you've said all those other things," she whispered when he finally lifted his lips from hers several minutes later, "do you think you could possibly say 'I love you'? I've been waiting to hear that since you began and—""I love you," he said fiercely. "I love you," he whispered softly, burying his face in her hair. I love you…” ~ JordanHow did I stumble upon this book you might wonder? It really was only one review that had me one-clicking. Well you can’t download this to your kindle but there is something special about sitting down with an old fashion bounded book.

Not a sequel
It went straight to charity as the person it was ordered for had thought it was a sequel. Faulty reading on their part.

More than a Great read...
This incredible read has stayed with me for years - this was bought a second time to have a copy while in England - have read it at least 9 times. And I'm sure, I'll get a few more reads in before it's all said and done. Fantastic romance!
